Black Travelers International takes on Havana

Our black travel group traveled to Cuba—a vibrant island steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. Our recent journey took us through the heart of this captivating destination, blending dance, history, and sun-soaked relaxation into an unforgettable adventure. Here’s a glimpse into our Cuban escapade, from the rhythmic beats of salsa to the tranquil shores of Varadero Beach.

A Classic Cruise Through Old Havana

Our Cuban adventure began with a nostalgic ride through the heart of Old Havana, but not just any ride—one in a classic car. As we settled into our vintage 1950s Chevy, the excitement was palpable. The engine roared to life, and we set off through the cobbled streets of Havana, surrounded by buildings that seem frozen in time.

Our driver, a Havana local with a deep love for his city, guided us past iconic landmarks such as the Plaza de la Catedral and the grand Capitolio. The beauty of these classic cars lies not just in their sleek, colorful exteriors but in the stories they carry. Each turn and rumble of the engine was a reminder of Havana’s rich past and its ability to hold onto its charm amidst modernity.

Cuba

Exploring Tradition: The Viñales Tobacco Farm

From the bustling cityscape of Havana, we journeyed to the serene countryside of Viñales Valley, renowned for its tobacco farms and breathtaking scenery. The rolling hills and lush greenery of Viñales provide a stark contrast to the urban hustle of Havana, offering a tranquil escape into Cuba’s agricultural heartland.

Our visit to a local tobacco farm was a highlight. The farmer, with a proud smile, walked us through the meticulous process of growing and curing tobacco. We marveled at the sight of rows upon rows of vibrant green tobacco plants, and our guide explained how each leaf is carefully tended to before being rolled into the exquisite cigars that Cuba is famous for. Sampling a freshly rolled cigar while overlooking the stunning valley was a sensory delight, combining the rich flavors of Cuba with its natural beauty.

Salsa Nights at Buena Vista Social Club

Back in Havana, we dove into Cuba’s musical soul with a visit to the legendary Buena Vista Social Club. The evening began with an ambiance steeped in the history of Cuban music. The club, famous for its role in popularizing traditional Cuban son and bolero music, was a pulsating celebration of rhythm and culture.

As the live band played, the dance floor came alive with salsa enthusiasts showing off their moves. We joined in, guided by the infectious energy of the music and the rhythm of the dancers. The experience was electric, with every beat and twirl reflecting the essence of Cuban life—joyful, passionate, and deeply connected to its musical roots.

Learn the Art of Cuban Cuisine: Cuban Cooking Class

During our leisure day in Havana, some opted to explore the traditions of Cuban cooking.  We signed up for a Cuban cooking class, where we learned to prepare traditional dishes like Ropa Vieja and Malanga. Our class was held in a local chef’s home, adding a personal touch to the experience. Not only did we get to cook authentic Cuban dishes, but we also learned about the cultural significance of each ingredient. The hands-on experience and delicious meal that followed were the perfect way to immerse ourselves in Cuba’s culinary traditions.

Enjoy Delicious Cuban Cuisine

Cuban cuisine in Old Havana is a vibrant reflection of the island's rich history and diverse cultural influences. The culinary scene here is marked by a blend of Spanish, African, and indigenous Taíno flavors. Traditional dishes are hearty and flavorful, featuring ingredients like pork, rice, black beans, plantains, and yuca.  During our visit we were able to sample many of the staples below.

Staple Dishes:

  • Ropa Vieja: Shredded beef cooked in a tomato-based sauce with onions and bell peppers.
  • Arroz con Pollo: A one-pot dish combining rice, chicken, and vegetables, seasoned with saffron and other spices.
  • Lechón Asado: Slow-roasted, marinated pork, often served with rice and beans.

Popular Sides and Snacks:

  • Tostones: Twice-fried green plantain slices, crispy and savory.
  • Moro: A mixture of rice and black beans cooked together.
  • Yuca con Mojo: Boiled yuca (cassava) served with a garlicky citrus sauce.

Street Food:

  • Cuban Sandwich: A pressed sandwich with roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, often enjoyed in the lively local cafes.
  • Croquetas: Fried croquettes, typically filled with ham or chicken.

Old Havana’s dining experience is enhanced by its lively atmosphere, historic surroundings, and the rhythmic backdrop of Cuban music. Whether in a cozy café or a bustling restaurant, the food in Old Havana is a delicious journey into the heart of Cuban culture.
