This is important, especially for western travelers. The flights from US destinations are generally more than 12 hours. In addition, most tours may take you out of the main city where there are less opportunities to buy food. If you are able to purchase food, this may not be the food that you are accustomed to. You can also consider a combined power plug adapter/voltage converter. To be sure, check the label on the appliance, as some appliances, such as tablets/laptops, photo cameras, cell phones, toothbrushes, etc. never need a converter.
In some African countries it is not safe to drink the water for US tourists. Know if you are advised to not drink the water. This includes using ice cubes and using the water to brush your teeth. If you are not sure then it is best to always use bottled water.
Know the traditional courtesies so as not to offend locals when visiting a new country. Courtesies can include the following:
Some locals will be offended if you take pictures of them without their permission. Photography is also not permitted at the airport, government institutions, police stations, embassies, or at military and strategic sites.
Regardless of whether you are traveling to a country in Africa or any region. It is always advisable that you provide your family in your home country with your itinerary and contact information.
