Safety Travel Tips for Solo Women Travelers

The most adventurous thing you can do as a woman is to become a solo traveler. It might seem an unusual idea based on the dynamics of society, but trust us, it will be the best experience of your life, and you will always be hungover from the thrill you witness. It allows the woman traveler to feel independent, find a purpose, and be her boss.

However, since you are traveling solo, it would require you to be a little more cautious about your safety. But don’t worry. Follow these tips inspired by a black woman traveler to help you be safe during your solo travel journey;

Travel Tips For Solo Women Travelers

Embrace your fear - Fear is natural and a natural part of growth. When we face our fears and move past them we can experience growth and increase our self esteem.

Stay in places surrounded by people - Make sure to stay in a place surrounded by people, especially women. You don’t want to risk your safety by staying in a deserted hotel. You could also look up reviews on Airbnb.

Keep a low profile - Make sure to keep a low profile. Keep a low profile to avoid unwanted attention and keep an eye out for any followers.

You may want to pack light - Since you are a solo traveler, make sure you pack only the necessary things because if you go heavy, you might be unable to lift the weight and end up hurting yourself.

Make sure your phone always has data - This can be useful as you navigate a new country.  Data will allow you to use your apps and GPS and allow you to notify others of your location.

Don’t rush into adventures - We do understand that you are out for adventures but give your body enough time to absorb the environment you are in. It is always better to take a rest in between your planned adventures.

Don’t isolate yourself - Instead, be social and meet with other people  and make friends. As a black woman traveler explains, the friends you meet while traveling solo are the friends of a lifetime.

Turn on your location - Share your location with friends and family when out and about.  This can come in handy if you are lost or need assistance.

Research - Before you visit the new place; learn about their culture, people, and environment.  This can assist you in having a more enjoyable experience.

Money - Don’t carry all your money with you all the time. Leave behind most of it in your hotel, if not needed.

Be anonymous
- Do socialize, however, don’t overshare the details that might bring trouble to you.

Dress - If you want to avoid the attention men tend to give to a solo woman, dress more conservatively.  Research the culture and determine the type of dress that is appropriate.

BONUS TIPS

Learn the language - learn a few words and phrases in the primary language of the place you are visiting. This will assist you with navigating the area.

Travel during the daylight hours - This is one rule that I use when traveling both domestically and internationally. During daylight hours, more individuals are out and moving about. This gives me the added security of navigating my environment and finding assistance, if needed.

Drink in moderation - Know your limit when it comes to consuming alcoholic beverages when traveling alone. You want to make sure that you don’t place yourself in a compromising position and become inebriated and unable to exercise good judgment.

Register your trip  - If you are traveling internationally, you should register your trip with the US Embassy or through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  This will help you to stay abreast of any emergencies, safety concerns, or even to help your family and friends get in contact with you.
