Five International Destinations that can be Explored in a Weekend

Traveling offers a unique opportunity to explore cultures and immerse in new experiences. For black travel groups seeking to connect with their roots and celebrate the richness of black culture, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean are treasure troves of destinations. Today, we give you 5 international trips you can take over a weekend! Prepare for breathtaking landscapes, historical sites, and vibrant black culture in South America, particularly Colombia and Brazil.

Cartagena

Located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, Cartagena de Indias is steeped in history, charm, and vibrant Afro-Colombian culture. Black travel groups to Cartagena will feel a deep sense of connection as they enjoy the rhythms of champeta and cumbia, savor delicious dishes like sancocho and arepas, and learn about the history of Afro-Colombian culture at the Palenqueras market.

Brazil

Brazil, the largest country in South America, is a melting pot of diverse cultures and home to the biggest African Diaspora population in the world. Joining our black travel group to Rio de Janeiro allows you to experience it firsthand. Through the energy of samba, breathtaking Carnival celebrations, and imposing historical sites like the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Salvador, the capital of Bahia, also known as ‘the capital of joy’, is another destination that black travel groups to Brazil shouldn’t miss. It’s where Afro-Brazilian traditions are deeply ingrained. Witness mesmerizing capoeira performances, explore the colorful Pelourinho neighborhood, and indulge in traditional Afro-Brazilian cuisine, breaking it up with lounging on the beach.

Cuba

Cuba holds a special place in the hearts of many black travelers due to its rich African heritage. Havana, the capital city that feels like traveling back in time, showcases a blend of Spanish colonial architecture and Afro-Cuban culture. The lively streets resonate with the rhythms of salsa and feature Afro-Cuban art. Learn about the elements of West African religions that make up Santeria, visit the Museum of Revolution and the African Heritage House, and take a dip in Cuba’s crystal clear waters with a rum cocktail in hand.

Mexico

Mexico delights travelers with incredible diversity – from the Caribbean turquoise waters of Quintana Roo, unique Oaxacan cuisine and culture, and ancient city ruins like the Wonder of the World Chichen Itza in Yucatan. And though Mexico is often associated with its indigenous cultures, it also has a significant Afro-Mexican population, who reside primarily in the coastal region of Costa Chica. Here you can get to know the Creole culture that formed over the centuries through music, food, and art and enjoy the best nature spots that the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca have to offer.

Nassau

Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is so much more than a postcard-perfect beach destination. Yes, the beaches are stunning. But Nassau also offers a captivating blend of Afro-Caribbean culture that can be explored in historic neighborhoods through traditional arts and heritage museums. On a trip to Nassau, you can alternate between island hopping and enjoying rake-and-scrape music performances.
