Five Popular Foods in Colombia

Arepas

Arepa is made of maize dough stuffed with a filling of egg, cheese, meat, or others and is eaten in many parts of South America.  Arepa’s are one of the most popular foods in Colombia and can be served throughout the day. Each region has its own version of arepas throughout Colombia.

Coconut

Coconut is popular throughout Colombia.  Coconut can be found  in many dishes including ice cream, desserts, rice, soups, drinks, candy, and practically any most dishes throughout the country.

Cafe de Colombia

Colombia coffee is made using 100% arabica beans that are grown on small family-run farms.  Most Colombian coffee is hand-picked and is grown on steep slopes of the Andes.  In addition, there are 22 different distinct coffee growing regions in Colombia which produce several distinct flavors of coffee.

Ceviche

Ceviche claims origin in Peru but it can be found in many coastal areas throughout Latin America including Colombia.  Ceviche consists of raw fish or shellfish marinated in citrus juice.  A cold salsa that consists of a combination of onion, avocado, cucumber, tomato, chili peppers, and cilantro can be added.   The dish is served with either tortilla chips or some type of cracker/bread.

Lechona

Whole roasted pig stuffed with onions, potatoes, peas, fresh herbs and     spices. This dish is usually served for celebrations and festivals.
